Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks by Little White Lies

Over the past year-and-a-bit here at Little White Lies we've been tinkering away on a very exciting new book project, the latest in a series of monographs made in collaboration with New York-based publisher Abrams. We’re thrilled to announce that Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks is now available.

Written by film critic Adam Nayman and lovingly assembled by our talented team of in-house designers, Masterworks is crammed full of original illustrations, archival photos and stills from Anderson’s full filmography, all beautifully packaged in an appropriately psychedelic design style.

Inside there are essays on all of PTA’s feature films to date – Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice and Phantom Thread – as well as his short film work and music videos. Plus, brand new interviews with some of Anderson’s frequent collaborators, including composer Jonny Greenwood, costume designer Mark Bridges and production designer Jack Fisk and a forward by the Safdie Brothers.

As well as killer illustrations by the likes of Laura Callaghan, Shyama Golden, Tim McDonagh and Alice Tye, Little White Lies team made use of design and print techniques that honour each film including embroidery (The Phantom Thread), letterpress (The Master) and screenprint (Boogie Nights). You can see some of the processes and techniques in the video above.
