Planet Ardbeg is a new brand platform centered around an anthology of sci-fi tales written and illustrated by three of the world’s leading comic artists: Ronald Wimberly, Emma Ríos, and Sanford Greene. The artists were commissioned to come up with an original idea inspired by one of Ardbeg’s three whiskies within the core range, and each artist brought their own bold and unique style of storytelling.

The launch of Planet Ardbeg was activated through a range of social assets designed to credibly connect Ardbeg’s story to a subculture full of passionate, creative people.

The Results

TCO produced and shot a series of behind the scenes videos which showcased the three artists in their respective studios in Caruña, North Carolina & New York. Providing the audience with a peek into the creative process of a comic artist & exactly what about the smoky tones of Ardbeg inspired their tale.

“Guardians of Oa” by Sanford Greene, which draws its influence from the rounded balance and smoky power of Ardbeg An Oa, is an action-packed epic about a copper city coming under attack from a monstrous creature. Just when it looks like all hope is lost, flavour notes unite to defeat the monster and restore balance.

At Ardbeg, we’re proud of the way that our boldly smoky whiskies provoke strong reactions (whether love or hate!). We wanted to explore another creative realm which has similarly passionate fans – so we partnered with TCO and with cutting-edge comics artists to create Planet Ardbeg, our first ever graphic novel. Their fantastical tales, which explore the many dimensions of our iconic whiskies in a brand new way, have allowed us to engage with Ardbeg fans and graphic novel fans alike.

When we first started thinking about making this graphic novel, I thought about Planet Ardbeg as a time machine. Time is important with whisky, and with Ardbeg An Oa, Ardbeg Wee Beastie, and Ardbeg Ten Years Old what you’re talking about is three different time experiences.
