Developed by showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Rings of Power was one of the most anticipated releases of 2022. Unrivalled in scope, it is set before the version of events explored in the books and Peter Jackson films and based upon Tokien’s Second Age. Amazon commissioned us to create a luxury coffee table book that would celebrate the core crafts in the show and pay homage to the many talented individuals involved.

The Results

After being given access to the first few episodes of the series, our design team started to pull together potential design routes, initially looking at multi-book options before settling on one premium linen-bound print project to cover the entirety of season one.

We worked through a number of different creative concepts before settling on the idea of a glossy, photo-rich mailer that showcased the breathtaking scenery and iconic cinematography and, at the same time, allowed stand-out moments from the many memorable performances from within the show to shine.

We wanted the depth and variety of visual artistry that the show provided to come through in the design of the book. To achieve this we combined full colour photography with luxe metallic divider spreads, a natural linen cover and translucent vellum overlay pages that acted as a screen through which to discover more information in the images. By balancing the materials in this way, we were able to represent the look and feel of the show in a way that felt authentic, creating an item that not only showcased the incredible craft of the show but created something recipients would want to read and keep.

Each chapter delved into the individual episodes, exploring the stand-out crafts and introducing the cast members who played a key role in that episode.
