Steps: Deo Kato’s Run for Justice

Film Production

The film follows the Ugandan-born ultra-runners 13,500km journey, using endurance as a way to explore migration, identity, belonging and what it really means to feel at home. What begins as a physical challenge becomes a wider reflection on why people move and what they leave behind.

Filmed over the course of the 2 years, including a stint in prison, the run highlighted and reframed narratives around migration and resilience.

Telling a story as complex as Deo Kato’s run from Cape Town to London is not easy, but TCO created a short film which captures more than just “man runs from point A to point B” which it could have easily been. Instead TCO presented Deo’s deeply personal journey, reflecting his quest for belonging and identity in a life as a legal immigrant, and the motivations needed to continue running for 518 days and 13,297km.
